Your Dénia house while you are away, and the day you come back

The house is shut for months. Then one evening you arrive with the suitcases and the key will not turn. Most of that can be prevented, and what cannot is quick to sort out.

Most of Dénia is somebody’s second home

A University of Alicante study presented to the town hall counts roughly 45,000 homes in Dénia. About 17,600 are lived in all year. More than 22,000 are second homes or holiday lets, and around 5,500 stand empty.

So a large share of the town’s front doors spend autumn and winter unopened, from apartments along Les Marines to villas in Les Rotes and on the Montgó.

Before you shut the house

  • Count the keys: yours, the cleaner’s, the agent’s, the neighbour’s, the previous owner’s.
  • If the count is uncertain, change the cylinder now rather than wonder all winter.
  • Leave one key with somebody local you trust, and tell them where the others are.
  • Lock every slider and try each outside door from the outside.
  • Photograph the edge of each door, with the cylinder. It makes any later job quicker.

The day you come back

  1. Try the key gently

    If it drags, do not force it: a snapped key turns a cleaning job into an opening.

  2. No oil

    Household oil gums a dry cylinder up further. A dry lubricant is the right thing.

  3. Ring if it will not go

    Opening a door you are locked out of is covered on the door opening page; the cylinder can be freed or replaced in the same visit.

The months the house is empty

In October 2024 the Guardia Civil broke up a group responsible for 97 house burglaries across the Marina Alta. Empty homes are part of the picture everywhere on this coast, and a sturdy cylinder and a well-fitted keep are the basics.

If the worst has happened, securing the door after a break-in can be arranged with your authorisation from abroad.

Owners who live away ask

After the winter the key only turns halfway. Should I keep trying?

Stop before it snaps. A key that has to be forced after months of disuse is telling you the cylinder is dry or dirty inside. Often it can be freed and cleaned rather than replaced, but only if the key is still in one piece.

I have no idea how many keys to my house are out there.

That is normal after a purchase or a few years of lettings. Changing the cylinder on each outside door puts the count back to the keys in your hand, which is the only number you can be sure of.

Can somebody else meet you at the house while I am abroad?

Yes, a neighbour, your cleaner or your agent, once you have confirmed who they are and authorised the work. The work and its price are agreed with you, not with them.

Can the locks be checked before I fly out, so I am not stuck on arrival?

Yes, as a booked visit with whoever holds a key: every outside door and slider tried, stiff cylinders dealt with, and a note of anything worth replacing.

A neighbour says the door looks forced. What happens now?

Ask them to call the police, then call us. With your authorisation the door can be made secure the same day, and you can decide about stronger locks once you have seen the police report.
